Making Tax Digital
The digitalisation of the tax system is already in place and expanding. All VAT registered businesses must now keep digital records and file quarterly returns via compatible software. VAT registration is mandatory above £90,000 turnover and optional below.
From April 2026, self-employed individuals and landlords with a business or property income of more than £50,000 will also be required to maintain digital records and submit returns electronically. The following year this reduces to income above £30,000. In all cases returns to HMRC move from annual to quarterly.
